Wallpaper vs paint: compare project costs
Compare the same finished area and the same scope of work. A paint-can price and a wallpaper-roll price do not describe complete projects. Both may need repairs, cleaning, primer, tools and labour. This worksheet uses entered prices rather than claiming a universal market rate.
Two different quantity models
Wallpaper requires full strips and usable cuts per roll. Paint uses the product’s stated coverage and coat count. Keep preparation separate rather than treating wallpaper roll area as paint coverage. For an illustrative 4.80 m by 2.80 m wall, area is 13.44 m². Our free-match example needs four physical 0.53 m by 10.05 m rolls with 0.10 m trim. If your paint label says 10 m² per litre per coat, two coats require 2.688 litres before allowance. Purchase the actual container size.
Make the budget comparable
| Line | Wallpaper | Paint |
|---|---|---|
| Finish | Physical rolls × roll price | Containers × price |
| Preparation | Repairs, primer, removal | Repairs, primer, removal |
| Application | Adhesive and tools | Rollers and protection |
| Labour | Installer quote | Painter quote |
An example, not a forecast
At an assumed 60 currency units per roll, four rolls cost 240. Add 35 for preparation and 180 for labour: the subtotal is 455. An alternative paint purchase of 70 plus supplies of 25 and labour of 140 totals 235. The difference is 220 for these assumptions only. Add tax, delivery, access and disposal when applicable. Do not interpret these invented example prices as market averages.
Maintenance and removal
Ask how each finish is cleaned and repaired. A matching spare roll may help a later repair but adds immediate cost. Paint touch-ups can also show after fading or changes in sheen. Do not assign a fixed lifespan without product and room information. A smooth, dry, stable substrate should be checked before buying either finish.
Compare written quotes that include the same preparation. Use the roll calculator for currency-labelled wallpaper totals and the panel calculator for fixed packages.
