Plan wallpaper removal before redecoration
Removal is separate from ordering new wallpaper. The current material, adhesive, primer and substrate influence how it comes away. Inspect the wall before committing to an installation date.
Test a small section
Identify the current product and obtain its removal instructions where possible. Look for multiple layers and remaining backing. A top layer that peels easily does not mean every wall will release the same way. Stop if the test reveals damaged plaster, unstable paint or an unidentified substrate.
Protect the wall
Materials require different methods. Heavy scoring, forceful scraping or excess moisture may cause repairs. This guide does not prescribe a universal chemical, steam setting or soaking time. Follow the product guidance and seek suitable assistance when uncertain. Obtain qualified assessment before disturbing potentially hazardous old materials.
Quote the complete sequence
- Protect the room and arrange appropriate access.
- Remove the covering with a suitable method.
- Deal with remaining backing and adhesive.
- Allow drying and inspect necessary repairs.
- Prepare for the specified new finish.
These steps may require separate visits. Ask whether a quote includes stripping only or repairs and priming too. A removal-only price does not necessarily leave a ready-to-paper wall. Record the agreed scope before comparing installers.
Measure after repairs
Replacement surfaces, lining, skirting and cornice changes can affect finished dimensions. Use final widths and the actual papered height for the new order. A sketch made before removal helps planning but should be checked again. Buy according to the new label rather than the size of old offcuts.
A useful test record
Note the product, number of layers, removal result and repair advice. A test that releases cleanly may still expose adhesive or a weak painted coating. Confirm the next preparation step rather than booking installation immediately. That record is more useful than adding a fixed waste percentage to new rolls.
