Wallpaper border quantity calculator
Calculate identical border runs
A border is measured along its horizontal route. Its printed height is not the room height, so the vertical wallpaper calculator is the wrong model. Measure each continuous run and identify the repeat along the border.
Why perimeter alone can mislead
Two 4 m walls and two 3 m walls have 14 m of perimeter. Dividing by 5 m per roll suggests three rolls. If each wall needs one uninterrupted piece, every run occupies its own roll: four rolls. Leftovers of 1 m and 2 m cannot form another uninterrupted 3 m run. Allowing a joint changes the cutting plan; decide this before calculating.
Trim and corner matching
Add total end trim to each run. Rounding the piece up to a complete horizontal repeat gives a conservative matching allowance. Exact corner alignment may need a specific start position, so check the label rather than assuming every leftover fits.
Use the border calculator
The border calculator repeats one run length a chosen number of times. It counts whole pieces per roll and leaves partial lengths unused. It does not optimize mixed lengths or join leftover pieces. For different run lengths, calculate groups separately, then ask an installer whether reuse can reduce the order.
Worked orders
Four 3 m runs with 0.10 m total trim need four 3.10 m pieces. A 5 m roll yields one, so four rolls are required. A 0.40 m repeat rounds the cut to 3.20 m without changing yield. Four 2 m runs with the same trim and no repeat need 2.10 m pieces; two fit per roll, so two rolls suffice. A selected spare is added after this arithmetic.
Surface preparation
Putting a border on existing wallpaper changes the surface and adhesive situation. Follow both product instructions; do not assume preparation for painted plaster applies to every covering. The Wallcoverings Association border resource discusses installation considerations. Its guidance is a preparation reference, not certification of this estimate.
Confirm the physical length supplied and its price using the roll packaging guide. Check a large repeat or decorative corner with your supplier before ordering.
