Can you wallpaper a textured wall?
A roll count does not establish whether the covering will adhere. Texture affects contact with the substrate. Product instructions and a representative sample should come before a full order.
Describe the surface
Photograph the wall under side lighting. Note smooth paint, fine texture, pronounced ridges or damaged plaster, and tell the supplier what coating is present. “Painted wall” alone does not describe sheen, dust, curing time or weak layers.
Match the adhesive system
Self-adhesive panels and pasted wallpaper can require different preparation. York’s specified vinyl peel-and-stick instructions warn against textured and unsuitable surfaces. Do not transfer advice for pasted paper to an adhesive panel. A generic recommendation cannot override the stock item’s instructions.
Try a representative sample
Follow the supplier’s test method and advised observation period. Test the difficult section rather than only a smooth patch. Examine seams, visible texture and removal effects, not just initial adhesion. A sample sticking for minutes does not prove long-term suitability.
Prepare instead of over-ordering
Ask about suitable repairs, lining or another finish if the product needs a smoother wall. Include preparation and labour in the budget. Another roll cannot fix an adhesion problem. Preparation may matter more than a small difference in material price.
Calculate after suitability
When the system is confirmed, measure the finished surface and use the exact roll dimensions. Fixed panels need their own width count and height check. Required overlap reduces effective coverage; texture is not a hidden adjustment to the strip formula.
A 144 in wall needs six panels with 24 in effective coverage. If an instructed overlap reduces coverage to 23.5 in, it needs seven. This is an installation-width rule, not a texture allowance. Check height plus trim separately, then round panels to complete packs.
