How much wallpaper for an accent wall?
An accent wall is a useful first wallpaper project because you can measure one wall without assuming that an entire room is rectangular. Choose the wall, identify the paper and plan where the pattern will start before ordering. A large centred motif can change the way you cut, even when the raw width is unchanged.
Measure the actual finished surface
Measure the widest part of the wall, including any recess you intend to cover. Check height at both ends and in the middle. If skirting and cornice remain in place, measure the papered height between them, then add a separate trim allowance. Do not confuse the total ceiling height with the part that will actually be covered.
Accent wall example
A wall 3.60 m wide and 2.40 m high needs 7 strips of 0.53 m paper because 3.60 ÷ 0.53 = 6.79. With 0.10 m trim and free match, a 10.05 m roll provides four 2.50 m cuts. The order estimate is 2 physical rolls, before spare stock. With a 0.64 m straight repeat, each cut becomes 2.56 m, yield falls to three, and the estimate becomes 3 rolls.
Windows, sockets and chimney breasts
Small openings do not remove the need for a full-width patterned strip. Keep them in the width for a conservative estimate. A chimney breast with returns is not one flat rectangle: enter the front and each papered return as separate widths. An installer may recover smaller pieces from offcuts, but the calculator does not assume that their pattern position fits.
Where to begin hanging
Quantity arithmetic does not choose a starting seam. Before cutting, think about whether the first and last strips would be narrow, whether a motif should sit at the centre and how paper continues around corners. Follow the product instructions for corner overlaps and adhesive. Avoid ordering less solely because an area estimate looks cheaper.
Ordering checklist
- Confirm physical roll dimensions and repeat.
- Use the greatest measured height.
- Check the number of full strips and the yield per roll.
- Ask for a consistent batch.
- Confirm whether sealed spare rolls can be returned.
Use the main calculator with just one wall. For unusual alignment, read pattern repeat and half-drop matching.
