Wallpaper in bathrooms and kitchens

Quantity comes after suitability. A wallpaper shown in a room photograph may not suit a damp wall or splash zone. Separate dry decorative walls from surfaces exposed to water, grease, heat or frequent cleaning.

Map exposure first

Draw the papered sections and mark showers, baths, sinks, cooker areas and walls with recurring condensation. Ask the product supplier which sections are suitable. Enter only the approved papered widths if another finish covers the wet section. Washable, scrubbable and suitable for a bathroom are different claims; confirm the exact product instructions.

Manufacturer guidance

York’s FAQ discusses generally dry bathroom walls away from showers or tubs. That advice does not certify every product for your room. Read the cleaning requirements, adhesive instructions and any product-specific exclusions before buying. Keep a copy with the batch label.

Measure fitted sections

A permanent cabinet may end a papered run below the ceiling. Use the actual finished height, but remember that windows and cabinets create different required lengths. The main calculator uses one maximum height and may overestimate a mixed-height project. Splitting the plan into height groups requires checking pattern alignment and offcut reuse.

A 2.60 m width with 0.53 m paper needs five strips. At 2.40 m height plus 0.10 m trim, a 10.05 m free-match roll supplies four cuts, so two rolls are required before spares. The presence of a basin cabinet does not automatically remove a strip.

Resolve dampness before covering

A decorative finish does not repair a moisture problem. Establish the cause and get appropriate help for damaged walls before covering them. Extra adhesive or a larger material allowance cannot compensate for an unsuitable substrate.

Plan repairs and cleaning

Keep the stock code, batch and care instructions. Ask whether future repairs justify an unopened matching roll, and confirm returns before buying it. References: York FAQs and installation guidance. Continue to texture checks and the quantity calculator.
