Pattern match waste: compare cuts, not percentages

Count usable cuts separately from leftover material.
Count usable cuts separately from leftover material.

A fixed waste percentage cannot describe every pattern. A cut length crossing a whole-strip yield boundary can change an order suddenly. Compare the same measured wall and physical roll before interpreting waste.

Hold inputs constant

Use a 4 m width, 2.4 m height, 0.1 m total trim and 0.53 m by 10.05 m roll. Eight strips cover the width. Free match uses 2.50 m cuts, four per roll and two rolls. A 0.64 m straight repeat rounds the cut to 2.56 m; only three fit, so three rolls are required. Just 0.06 m extra per cut causes a larger change in the purchased quantity.

Three different leftovers

Repeat allowance reserves length for alignment. Roll tail is the remainder after maximum full-cut yield. Edge offcuts are narrow widths removed from a final strip. They are not interchangeable. Adding their areas does not demonstrate that another full-height, correctly matched strip exists.

Half-drop sequencing

Our model adds half a repeat to each repeat-rounded cut, producing 2.88 m in this example and still three cuts per roll. An installer may achieve a better alternating pattern-phase sequence. The tool does not find that optimum. Draw the required starting phases and consult instructions before reducing an expensive order.

Height boundaries

At 2.50 m height plus 0.10 m trim, a 0.64 m repeat rounds 2.60 m to 3.20 m. Three cuts still fit, with less tail. If height requires a 3.84 m cut, yield drops to two; eight strips then need four rolls. Test the actual height rather than rounding it down.

Comparison does not choose your match

The result comparison shows consequences, not permission to hang a matched product randomly. Choose the match on the label. Unspecified offsets, reverse hanging, murals and a required starting motif need a specific plan. A spare roll is separate from cutting allowance and is added after the base quantity.

Read the precise formulas and the alignment guide. These examples are checkable arithmetic, not a manufacturer waste table or a promise of exact on-site consumption.
